  • The Historical Metallurgy Society, in partnership with the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, has produced a catalogue of all of the material held in the National Slag Collection. This collection of metallurgical slags, drosses and resdiues was collected primarily by members of the Historical Metallurgy Society over the last 50 years and deposited with the Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust. The collection includes material from over 200 sites from prehistory to the 20th century.

A simple catalogue of the National Slag Collection can be downloaded. This contains information (where available) on the provenance of the material and the processes which generated it (where these are known). It also contains links to relevant photographs.

Given the long period over which this collection has been built up and its varied origins some of the identifications are tentative. If you have any observations, suggestions, extra information or corrections please contact david.dungworth@english-heritage.org.uk.
